Create a stronger, happier relationship with these best marriage books for 2017
Why do half of all marriages end in divorce? Are we too quick to get married? Are we too quick to give up?
My wife and I are approaching our eighth anniversary, it hasn’t always been easy and there was more than one time that we considered separating. It was only through counseling and a few of the best marriage books that we were able to save our marriage.
That’s why I love sharing my list of favorite marriage books each year. Between my wife and I, we’ve read nearly every book in the list.
Each book is available on Amazon with a link so you can get more detail and browse other top relationship books. Most are priced at just a few books and well worth it to create a stronger, happier marriage with your partner.
Best Marriage Books for Before Tying the Knot in 2017
Before you fly off to Vegas for those midnight nuptials, try reading one of these marriage books with your future spouse. Read a chapter a week and spend half an hour talking about it and your relationship.
Things I Wish I’d Known Before We Got Married by Gary Chapman
You’ll see Gary Chapman come up a few times in this list of best marriage books as well as in a previous list of best relationship books. With more than 35 years counseling couples on their marriage and relationships, the guy knows what he’s doing.
Things I Wish I’d Known Before We Got Married is a little more conversational thank some of his other books, it reads just like you are talking back and forth with someone and discussing what they’ve learned about marriage. It’s a great primer for what to expect in your marriage and how to avoid some of the biggest problems.
47 Little Love Boosters for a Happy Marriage: Connect and Instantly Deepen Your Bond by Marko Petkovic
This one is shorter than the other marriage books but a great little list of things you can do to show your spouse how much you care. Each ‘love booster’ is described in detail and most can be done for free at home. The book comes with a complimentary audio book to listen on the go. It won’t turn around a marriage in trouble but you’re bound to pick up a few pointers and, at just a few bucks, it’s well worth it.
The 4 Seasons of Marriage: Secrets to a Lasting Marriage by Gary Chapman
This is one of those must read books for understanding love and relationships. Even the best marriages go through stages or cycles that are a lot like the changing seasons. Without working on a relationship, the happiness and hope of spring can quickly turn to discouragement and detachment of winter.
That doesn’t mean you have to be content with living through the tough times in a marriage. This book helps you see the problems that cause a long ‘winter’ in a marriage and helps you turn the clock back to spring. Just as some cities see very mild and easy winters, so can your relationship. You’ll have longer periods of happiness and will be able to spot trouble before it gets too bad.
How We Love: Discover Your Love Style, Enhance Your Marriage by Milan and Kay Yerkovich
This book really opened my eyes to how my past was affecting my relationships. Be warned, what you’ll find might shock you as you think about your past and understand how it shaped the person you are today.
The authors guide you through what they call ‘intimacy imprints’ the early life experiences that shape your behavior, beliefs and expectations for future relationships. There are four types of injured imprints that affect many people and lead to big problems in marriages. As you start to understand these imprints, you also start to understand how to avoid the behavior and emotions that ruin half of all marriages.
Top Books to Save Your Marriage and Make it Stronger

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work: A Practical Guide from the Country’s Foremost Relationship Expert by Dr. John Gottman and Nan Silver
Dr. Gottman has studied married couples for years as a professor of psychology at the University of Washington and his workshops are famous for helping troubled marriages. This book is everything he puts into his workshops including all the questionnaires and exercises to help you understand the seven principles.
You’ll learn how to solve the conflicts in a marriage by turning toward each other instead of away. One of the best principles for me was learning how to create shared meaning and how to use it to bring my wife and I closer together.
His Needs, Her Needs: Building an Affair-Proof Marriage by Willard F. Harley Jr
The biggest problem in most marriages is that men and women have different needs. The best marriage books help you understand your relationship from your spouse’s perspective and what they need to be satisfied. The author identifies the ten most vital needs for men and women then helps you understand how to not only fulfill those needs but to be irresistible to your spouse.
This one was recently revised and expanded to include new advice to highlight the special significance of intimate emotional needs in a marriage. Read this one with your spouse to better understand each other and create that unshakeable bond.
Save Your Marriage: The Secret to Intimacy and Communication Skills by Lisa Robinson
This third edition of the book includes an easy to follow strategy to implement everything you learn throughout the book. The author refers to Chapman’s marriage book “The 5 Love Languages” often and it feels a little like a companion guide, helping you actually use some of the theories and ideas. Some great, practical ideas for rediscovering the passion in your marriage.
Everlasting Love: How to Unlock Your Spouse’s Heart and Create an Unbreakable, Meaningful Relationship by Tyler Green
This is another brief read but worth the couple of bucks on Kindle to get a few ideas to help save a troubled marriage. I liked the book because it didn’t get into academic theories or ideas. Instead it just kept to the basics that make a marriage work and provided steps to strengthen and maintain your relationship.

Sometimes a relationship gets so strained, you need a higher power to help fix it. These marriage books about love and faith will help you become closer together and with God.
The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of God by Timothy and Kathy Keller
This New York Times bestseller is based on Pastor Keller’s famous sermon series taking a detailed look at what the bible says about marriage and its vision of the bond. It breaks down modern-day assumptions about marriage to get back to what it really means. Co-authored with his wife of 37 years, it’s essential reading for anyone who wants to know God and love more deeply in this life.
You and Me Forever: Marriage in Light of Eternity by Francis and Lisa Chan
I love these books authored by husbands and wives because they come from both perspectives. This is one of my favorite marriage books for understanding how to love with your soul and changed a lot of what I thought about marriage. Even better, 100% of the proceeds from the book go to supporting ministries for the shelter and rehabilitation of children and exploited women.
