I met my match on Match.com but it wasn’t until making some online dating mistakes first
You’ve tried all the niche online dating sites. Want to find out why Match is the #1 destination for online dating with more dates, relationships and more marriages than any other site?
I was on Match.com twice. Sadly, it seems as though I was on every online dating site twice. The first time on Match, I had no luck at all. It was one of the first times I filled out a profile and I wasn’t very good about talking about myself. My profile sucked and I got a little bitter that I wasn’t meeting more people.
Most of the online dating sites offer some kind of a blog but none do a good job of telling you how to fill out a profile that will attract a match. Maybe they do that on purpose, keep you in the dark so you spend more time paying to meet other people.
The second time on Match, I met my wife so I’m speaking from experience when I say that you can meet people on the dating site. I learned a lot about dating sites, especially Match.com, and love to share the secret to using online dating whether it’s just to meet other people or to find the love of your life.
This Match.com review will guide you through everything you need to know and how to use the site to find that special connection.

My Match.com Review and What I Wish I Knew
Like a lot of my experiences on online dating sites, I wish I knew then what I was doing wrong and how I could have had more success. Then again, I wouldn’t have eventually met my wife if things had worked out different on Match or another dating site so maybe it was fate.
I guess I’m just hoping that by posting these internet dating reviews that you don’t have to wait as long as I did to find love. Be sure to check out my online dating comparison chart for a quick look at the most popular sites.
What is Match.com?
I want to say that Match.com is your typical online dating website, but that makes it sound like you shouldn’t waste your time. Match is like the other dating sites in that you create an account, set up your profile, add some pics and then you begin searching for potential partners.
The entire profile process takes at most 20-30 minutes depending upon how long of a profile you write. (Remember, the more you write the better!) From there, you are free to browse the selection of singles and introduce yourself.
What’s the secret to getting matched?
There is also a section where you can complete a questionnaire about yourself and what you are looking for in a partner. For eHarmony this part is required, but it’s optional on Match but…absolutely critical that you fill it out in detail.
Match will highlight areas of your profile that matches another person’s profile when they answer the same. I also found it useful just to learn more about the other person since some people don’t write a detailed profile.
The required portions of the Match profile and the questions it asks take much less time compared to eHarmony. This isn’t necessarily a good thing. Isn’t it worth a few hours (or more) of your time to find a better match? The huge list of questions on eHarmony really helps the system to match you with compatible people.
The secret to success on Match is to do more than is required.
Most people will just fill out the basic Match questions and their profile will SUCK!

I like eHarmony’s depth but I met my wife on Match so there’s definitely something to be said for the site. Check out my review of eHarmony and the eHarmony questions to compare the dating sites.
Getting Matched on Match.com
While it is 99% up to you to find your matches, Match.com does send you emails on a daily basis of people the site thinks would be a good match for you. When I was using the site, I didn’t pay much attention to these emails. I was more interested in searching for girls myself, so I can’t say how good or bad Match is at sending you matches.
Communicating With Your Match
When it comes to communicating, you have a few options. You can simply “flirt” with someone by sending them a wink. I had a handful of women “wink” at me, but I never would “wink” at a woman. Another option is to comment on a picture. You can leave a simple comment on a person’s picture, like “awesome pic” or something along those lines. Again, I never did this but I know of a few men that did and were almost guaranteed to get a reply back.
Your final option is to simply email. It’s as straight-forward as it sounds – you just send an email and wait (or hope) for a reply.
The important thing is to be creative and sincere when reaching out to people on dating sites. Understand that someone might be getting dozens of winks or comments on their profile every day, what is going to make you different?
- Comment on something within their profile rather than their picture. This tells them you at least took the time to read about them rather than just scanning through pics. If you can’t find something within their profile that interests you…should you really be connecting?
- Ask a question about their profile, not something personal but something like how they liked an experience they had or what it was like. This gives them something to talk about in a reply rather than having to think of a conversation starter themselves.

Things I Like About Match.com
Freedom: I liked the option to search for my matches. I would go into the advanced search option and break down the criteria for exactly what I was looking for. Note that if you are super picky, this can actually be a bad thing as you limit the potential dating pool a lot.
New User Highlights: There are a lot of people that use Match.com so it can be hard when looking at the profile pics to remember who you’ve looked at before. Match makes this a little easier by highlighting the newbies to the site, so you can easily see them stand out and read their profile to see if they are a match for you.
MatchWords: This is like an advanced search feature where you put in tag words like “adventurous” or “golf” and Match will show you user profiles that also have those same MatchWords.
Things I Dislike About Match.com
Lack of Response: I don’t know what it is with Match.com but this was the only site where I would get blown off regularly. In this I mean I would email 10 – 15 women and I might get 1 reply. With all of the other dating sites, I would get around 6 – 8 responses. Maybe it was my lack of experience with online dating at the time. I just found it very difficult to get women to respond.
Furthermore on this topic, you can create a profile and search for free, you just cannot message people. But, people can message you. I wonder how many of the women I emailed weren’t paying members and therefore couldn’t message back or weren’t actively visiting the site.
Rebilling: I didn’t have an issue with this, but if you Google anything about Match.com, you will read thousands of stories about the rebill process. For that reason, I feel that it is fair to mention it here. Here is how it works: when you pay, you will automatically be renewed when your subscription is up. You have to manually uncheck a box in your account settings to turn off auto-renew. Most all online dating sites do this, not sure why everyone thinks Match.com is a scam for it.
Additionally, when you uncheck the box, you will get a cancellation email confirming this. Some interpret the email as saying they can no longer use the site. This is not the case. You can continue to use Match.com until your current subscription ends. You can ignore the “Re-Activate” button when you log in to your account as well. This is just telling you that you will not be auto-renewed.
My Experience on the Match dating site
As I mentioned at the start, I was on Match.com twice. The first time was a complete and utter failure. I was on for three months, messaging what seemed like every single woman on the site and never got a response. OK, I didn’t email every woman, but I didn’t get responses and likewise, never went on a date.
The second time around, I tried to better my odds. Before paying, I signed up and browsed through the women. Note that creating an account is free, but to message, you need to pay. So, I found 10 -15 women that I could email and thought I stood a chance with, then signed up. I think maybe 1 or 2 replied. But then my future wife emailed me and the rest as they say, is history.
Match has recently introduced Stir Events, which is basically like a singles night out, just more fun. They have various types of events, from happy hours, to bowling, to cooking classes and events for pet owners. I personally have not tried Stir Events out since this feature wasn’t available when I was on the prowl. However, I think that these events are a great idea and would have taken advantage of them if they were around when I was still single.
Comparing Match with other Online Dating Sites
I’ve spent a lot of time writing about online dating sites and even more time before that trying to meet someone online. I can tell you that not all online dating services are created equal but most offer so many free trials or special discounts that it’s easy to give a few a chance.
I usually recommend people start with some of the larger dating sites like Match.com just because there are so many more people on the site. These larger sites usually offer the best deals and it’s easy to meet a few people even during the free trial period.
If you don’t see much from the larger sites, it might be time to focus on one of the smaller, niche dating sites that cater to much more specific audiences. These sites won’t have as many people on them but they will share common interests and personalities so there’s a better chance at a connection.
Overall Thoughts on Match for Finding Love
The cost for Match.com is in the middle of the pack compared to the other online dating sites. As with other sites, they do offer you discounts if you sign up for a longer term. You can choose to sign up for one month ($35.99), three months ($19.99), or six months ($17.99). Note that the prices are charged on a monthly basis.
To sign up, simply click here, or click on the banner below. For a limited time, you will save 20% off the membership!
Overall, I liked Match.com and would recommend it to people trying to find that someone special. Yes, I failed miserably the first time but that failure eventually led to finding love. I know many others that use the site and have great success with it the first time. The number of potential matches is huge and that is why it is a must to try it out. After all, you’ll never find what you are looking for if you never even make an attempt at looking.
